A buddy had a surface grinder he changed to belts and it worked really good. Several folks have changed to belts with good results. By nature of a belt I think 1/2 a thou (.0005") is a good result.

A belt is nice for finishing flats on fixed blades, with belt grit changes. Really helps to strip the grit off the belt splice though. Ideally it would be great to have two surface grinders, one with stone wheel and one set up for belts.
